Randy is a fourth-generation livestock producer with cowboy roots that run deep, as evidenced by his continuing partnership with his dad in the cattle business with ranches in Nashville and in Cuervo. He serves on the board of the North American Corriente Association and competes in the sport of team roping when time allows. Randy was breaking horses for wages and began competing in rodeo at age 13. He continued to rodeo in high school and college, earning a scholarship to New Mexico State University as a bullrider, bareback rider and team roper. Later, he worked on ranches from the Alvord in eastern Oregon to the JJ Ranch on the Canadian River breaks in west Texas. He graduated from Washington State University and then moved to Kentucky to be a horse doctor for some of the best-known horse farms in the world. In the early 1990s, Randy began drawing from his experiences as a cowboy to write and record music.
